Result of a Crush Red Wine
Result of a Crush Red Wine
This little wine called “Result of a Crush” has continuously been among the most popular wines we’ve offered on Impulse. We started with their original non-vintage red about a year and a half ago, then last year featured their 2011, as they moved into making vintage wines. Today, we have their 2012 red, which is the best one yet, as this vintage has proven to be amongst the best in Washington State history, across the board.
A quick recap of the origins of Result of a Crush: It’s an offshoot project by the Reynvaan Family, of the cult status Reynvaan Family Vineyards. They started their Reynvaan label with tremendous pedigree, being the only people I know to have worked with Christophe Baron of famed Cayuse Vineyards as their vineyard and winemaking consultant. They planted their vines in a specific area of Walla Walla known as The Rocks of Milton-Freewater, which is where the Cayuse vineyards are as well. Debuting with a style of wine very similar to Cayuse itself, the winery became an instant success with their first release in 2009. Today, they’re among Washington’s most wanted list for collectors and wine lovers, only thing is they’re near impossible to get. With a quick visit to their website, you’ll immediately notice that all their wines are sold out, and the only option is to sign up for the wait-list, to get on to their mailing list.
Lucky for us, the Reynvaan sisters stepped up and convinced their brother Matt (the winemaker) to help them launch Result of a Crush. The idea is, each year Matt takes what he can of Reynvaan’s “declassified” wine, and combines it with a bit of juice from some of his fellow Walla Walla winemakers. The result is a slightly more readily available wine, at an extremely approachable price- considering that the mainline Reynvaan wines can go for $60 or more. The somewhat cute label may well belie the fact that, inside the bottle, there is serious juice and the wine tastes very clearly of the Reynvaan style and of the storied Rocks of Milton-Freewater area of Walla Walla.
For those who have ordered Result of a Crush in the past, you know how its flavor profile is focused on tertiary style notes of smoked olive, cured bacon, garrigue, dried leaves, and a hint of scorched earth giving way to a savory meatiness. However, the lushness of the 2012 vintage has upped the game on primary fruit components this year, giving it a bit more brightness with notes of huckleberry, lip smacking raspberry, a flirty violet scent, and hints of bubblegum. The wine is aged for 12 Months in 30% new and 70% neutral oak barrels, leaving no heaviness, making for a very silky smooth mid-palate and clean finish. Overall, a lovely bottle of wine for those who like the classic earth tones, for which Cayuse and Reynvaan have become so well known, and for those wanting to try this very distinct expression of Washington State terroir.
