Paplow Cellars Boushey Vineyard GSM

Paplow Cellars Boushey Vineyard GSM

You won't find Paplow Cellars wine in too many places around town and the winery itself is so new that it doesn't even have a website. The Paplow Cellars Boushey Vineyard GSM is a blend of 67% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, 9% Cinsault, and 4% Viognier, all sourced from Boushey Vineyards- Washington's premier source for Rhone style grapes. All five grapes are co-fermented, then aged for 19 months neutral French oak barrels. The result is a medium bodied wine with classic Cotes du Rhone styling. It shows off notes of white pepper, dehydrated strawberries, dried sage leaves, ripe raspberries, and hints of smokiness. It's a fun wine, and a strong first showing from someone who has the potential to be among Washington State's next big winemakers. I'll surely continue to keep an eye on Ben Paplow and Paplow Cellars.

In 2009 I worked at Efeste during the harvest season, learning everything I could from Brennon Leighton. Brennon is now the head winemaker for Charles Smith's wines, and we have featured many of his labels such as the Sixto Chardonnays and the B. Leighton reds. I had known Brennon for several years at that point and held a high opinion of him and his wine knowledge, hence why I wanted to work for him and learn from him- it was an incredible opportunity. During that time, he had an assistant winemaker named Ben Paplow working for him for several years. I enjoyed working with Ben, he was a great guy and I liked his approach to wine. After Brennon Leighton moved on from Efeste to Charles Smith, Ben Paplow moved on as well, and has been the assistant winemaker at Gorman Cellars for a number of years now. With many years of experience working under two very well known winemakers, Paplow is now starting his own eponymous winery, Paplow Cellars, and I'm very pleased to be offering his first release on Impulse.

Ben made just 97 cases of the Paplow Cellars GSM, so it's rather limited.
