Orr Wines Old Vine Chenin Blanc

Orr Wines Old Vine Chenin Blanc

The Orr Wines Chenin Blanc is hand-picked, pressed whole cluster, with the juice fermented and aged in a combination of neutral French oak barrels and stainless steel drums. Erica Orr doesn't inoculate with commercial yeasts, and lets the fermentation commence naturally, allowing for things to progress in a slow and steady fashion which is believed to supply the final wine with greater nuance. The Orr Wines Chenin Blanc shows classic characteristics of the grape, like the Vouvrays of France's Loire Valley. It's nutty, with notes of dried figs, melon rind, and hints of lanolin. There are displays of fresh citrus zest, dried pineapple, and dates, finishing off with acute acidity and a touch of salinity.

Erica made only 200 cases of the Orr Wines Chenin Blanc in 2016.

When I worked my very first harvest at Matthews Winery in 2006, I was lucky enough to work with Erica Orr who was the assistant winemaker there at the time. She boast an impressive resume, with a masters degree from UC Davis, which is considered the most advanced winemaking school in the world. Erica Orr has honed her craft at top wineries such as Rudd Estate and Cain Vineyard in Napa, Domaine Dujac in Burgundy, and Yering Station in Australia. After her time at Matthews, she started her own consulting operation, and has since been involved with the winemaking at wineries such as Baer, Mark Ryan, Sparkman, and Guardian Cellars, all culminating in the starting of her own winery, Orr Wines, where she has placed her focus squarely on Chenin Blanc.

The Orr Wines Chenin is sourced from Rothrock and Upland Vineyards, both featuring old Chenin Blanc vines approximately 40 years in age. Located in the Yakima Valley and on Snipes Mountain AVA, respectively, both vineyards offer well drained soils on south-facing slopes, approaching 1000 feet of elevation in the deserts of Eastern Washington.
