Efeste Winery "Taylor Mag" Cabernet Sauvignon

Efeste Winery "Taylor Mag" Cabernet Sauvignon

24.99 28.00

The Efeste Taylor Mag is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 95% of the grapes coming from their own estate vineyard and a 5% splash added from Klipsun Vineyard. It's aged for 20 months in French oak barrels, with 70% of them new- a rather generous proportion at this price range. This wine really delivers for the dollar, offering full-bodied texture and maximum smoothness for a big bold Cabernet Sauvignon. It's dark and chocolatey showing inviting layers of black currant, raspberry jam, and blackberries, with alluring hints of lavender, licorice, mocha, and vanilla. It has a firm backbone, with a bit a grip, letting you know it is in fact a Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Efeste Taylor Mag Cabernet Sauvignon received 91+ points from Stephen Tanzer, and is one of my new favorite value reds.

It's commonly believed that older vineyards with older vines produce the best wines, however, I've found that this is not always the case. Currently in Washington State we are booming with new vineyards being planted, and I've had a chance to taste several of them and form new opinions regarding old vines versus new vines. I'm finding that wines made from some of Washington's newest vineyards are actually some of the best wines I've taste of late, and I have a theory as to why this might be the case. While old vines are romanticized, the fact is that our newest vineyards are being planted with much more skill, knowledge, and care than those from decades ago. Thirty or Forty years ago, when the founders of Washington State Wine first planted their initial vineyards, they had very little expertise regarding vineyards, and significantly less knowledge of the land in which they planted them. Today, those same people are planting new vineyards with decades of experience, and an arsenal of consultants, tools, and new technology guiding them- ensuring that they make the best decisions possible when planting. The results truly speak for themselves.

Among those planting new vineyards is Efeste Winery. They have enlisted Dick Boushey, one of Washington wine's best vineyard managers, to take the helm at all of their estate vineyards. They've just recently released a brand new Cabernet Sauvignon from their "Taylor Mag" Vineyard on Red Mountain, and it's not to be missed. Efeste made only 280 cases of their Taylor Mag Vineyard Cabernet, and I'm really pleased that they've made 5 of those cases available to offer on Impulse. They haven't even listed this wine on their own website, and they're already sold through almost all of it.
